Swing for Sustainability: How Baseball and Softball Can Drive Sustainable Development among the Youth in Nigeria

Baseball and softball, often regarded as America's favorite pastime, are not just games played on green fields under the sun. They are also powerful global change agents for promoting character and leadership development among the youth, fostering community engagement, nurturing environmental stewardship, and building friendships, partnerships, and positive life styles. Like any major sports, baseball and softball are deeply rooted in tradition, yet have evolved to embrace modern values, such as fair-play, respect, integrity, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability.

At the heart of baseball and softball's contribution to sustainable development lies their ability to bring people together. Whether it's a neighborhood weekend game or an amateur inter-school tournament, sport has a unique ability to break down barriers and unite individuals from diverse backgrounds. As Nelson Mandela once put it, “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, it has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope, where once there was only despair.” Such social cohesion can be the needed solid foundation for sustainable development through the promotion of inclusion, understanding, cooperation, and shared responsibility.

The Baseball/Softball Recreational Club of Abuja is working to seed and grow the games of baseball and softball in Nigeria by kindling the interest of young boys and girls in selected primary and secondary schools in Abuja. The Club aims to train cohorts of selected female and male students, coaches, umpires, ground-keepers, and artisans, respectively, in the partner schools. Training will also be done on how to record the scores; sports journalists will be trained on baseball commentating and news reporting.

Bringing parents and other spectators to intra- or inter-school games will offer opportunities for the Club to sensitize, model and lead local partners in prioritizing environmental awareness, implementing eco-friendly and waste reduction practices in stadium operations, and promoting green initiatives in local communities.

Furthermore, these sports will play a pivotal role in promoting health and well-being among the young girls and boys, contributing to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being.

By encouraging physical activity and teamwork, baseball and softball will help to reduce sedentary lifestyles and promote healthier communities. Moreover, it will engender a stron sense of belonging and camaraderie, thereby contributing to mental and emotional well-being, character resilience and social cohesion.

Overall, the Club seeks to utilize the beautiful game Baseball/Softball as a vehicle for youth education and development. Through programs like School Inter-House League, Inter-School League, and eventually, Community Youth Amateur League, the Club envisages imparting valuable life skills such as leadership, discipline, and teamwork. By engaging young people in constructive activities, baseball and softball could contribute to sustainable development by nurturing future leaders and active citizens.

Nigeria has a youthful population which median age is just around 18 years, both for females and males, a demographic profile that calls a strong yearning for a youth-centric national social development agenda. Nigeria ought to be aggressively investing in quality education, sports, entertainment, citizen orientation, and economic policies that can generate massive numbers of employment. Instead, the Nigerian youth feel desperately trapped in rampant unemployment, an epileptic tertiary education crippled by endless labor union strikes, impaired access to political participation, and a gross neglect of the sports sector which could have offered a bit of ventilation for the energy of the youth. The obvious consequences have included a high rate of crime, rampant cultism, and a supercharged desperation among the youth to migrate to countries that they perceive as greener pastures. Many have died in perilous journeys, with the intent to somehow enter illegally into such countries.

Precisely to relieve some of these harsh effects and also address their root causes, the Baseball/Softball Recreational Club of Abuja, being a development-oriented nonprofit organization, is working to make baseball/softball a major national amateur and professional sport in Nigeria, in order to create a pathway for Nigerian youth to actualize their dreams and aspirations, similar to what Football (a.k.a Soccer) has offered to many young women and men in the country in recent years. Baseball and softball will importantly contribute to the opening of alternative channels of self-expression for the Nigerian youth, beyond just the soccer.

We are optimistic that imparting baseball skills on young girls and boys in Nigeria could generate strong economic benefits in the future, as some of them could become professional baseball/softball players in Nigeria or in other countries. We also envisage future amateur competitions generating local economic spinoffs in the form of related small businesses and other value chain activities. Such economic vitality will contribute to the overall well-being and resilience of communities, aligning with the goals of sustainable development under the 2030 Agenda.

In conclusion, the Baseball/Softball Recreational Club of Abuja sees baseball and softball as more than just games; they are catalysts for sustainable development. Through their promotion among young girls and boys in Nigeria, the Clubs seeks to significantly contribute to social inclusion, environmental stewardship, health and well-being, education, leadership and character development, mental health, and local economic vitality. By harnessing and unleashing the power of baseball and softball in Nigeria, we aim to advance towards a happier, more equitable and sustainable future for all in the country.
