Hon. Charles "Robin" Humphrey
Our Founder and CEO, Dr. Utiang P Ugbe, met Mr. Charles “Robin” Humphrey in 2004 at the Bloomington Campus of the Indiana University. Utiang was a Visiting Fellow at the IFRI (now Ostrom) Post-Graduate Workshop at the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, where Robin worked at the time.
Robin was a big fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, and Utiang was from Manchester, New Hampshire, in New England, northeastern USA, a territory of the Boston Red Sox nation.
The Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox were in the 2004 World Series of that year. Utiang was not a die-hard lover of baseball and was not fully acquainted with the rules of the game. However, he accepted Robin’s kind invitation to watch Game 1 of the Series together at Robin’s residence. Robin patiently explained the rules as the game progressed, and Utiang caught the excitement right away. They then
watched the rest of the 2004 World Series together. By the end of the Series, the two were good friends. Utiang become a lover of the game of baseball, and
started dreaming of seeding and growing the beautiful game in his home country, Nigeria. Robin and Utiang kept their friendship over the 20 years rom 2004 to 2024, and worked together, piece by piece, toward actualizing their shared dream of bringing the beautiful game of baseball to little children in elementary and secondary schools in Nigeria. The successful formal incorporation of the Baseball/Softball Recreational Club of Nigeria is a result of that lasting friendship and joint work, and Robin and Utiang feel especially glad about it, although it is just the first of many steps that at still to be taken.
Robin has already done the important work of a Goodwill Ambassador for the Club. He painstakingly sourced for and collected used books on (or about)
Baseball, for the Club. Today, despite only being incorporated in March, 2024, has the largest baseball library on the African continent. The Club already has
over 60 hard copies of famous baseball books, from Macmillan’s Baseball Encyclopedia (edited by Joseph Reichler), to Joe Garagiola’s all-time classic Baseball is a Funny Game. We heartily acknowledge the indirect, moral support of Robin’s dad, the Hon. Charles “Jock” Humphrey, who has encouraged Robin’s goodwill ambassadorial role with our Club.
